With the 4th of July next Tuesday, law enforcement officials will be on a heightened alert for DUI drivers over the long holiday weekend, beginning on Friday, June 30. A press release from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) warns that "the LAPD and other law enforcement agencies will be looking and stopping impaired drivers who put lives in danger. Over this holiday, keep in mind that impairment by alcohol and/or drugs can be deadly. Remember: Drive Impaired and Get Arrested. The LAPD will deploy additional officers at DUI/Driver License Checkpoints and DUI Saturation Patrols specifically to stop and arrest drivers showing signs of alcohol or drug impairment." You can read more about DUI Checkpoints on our previous blog posts (Part 1 and Part 2).
One point worth noting in the press release is the LAPD's reference to "drugs." With the legalization of marijuana, combined with an increase in DUI cases that involve drugs, the LAPD will deploy specially trained officers to evaluate those drivers suspected of drug-impaired driving. The same LAPD press release further advises "if you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to be arrested for DUI. Marijuana is an impairing drug, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in being arrested for DUI."
The LAPD will be operating the following DUI Checkpoint and Saturation Patrols this weekend:

Note that LAPD did not release the locations of those patrols which will be conducted on the 4th of July itself, but rest assured there will be DUI Checkpoints operating throughout Los Angeles on that date. The California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and local law enforcement agencies will also be operating their own DUI Checkpoints and Saturation patrols. One of the reasons for heightened alert for DUI drivers on holiday weekends is due to the high number of deaths caused by impaired driving during these times. In 2015, there were 271 DUI-related deaths on state roads, according to the California Highway Patrol. The best advice to follow is simply to not drive if you have consumed alcohol, marijuana, or any other drugs.
