Recent DUI Crashes Will Bring More DUI Enforcement in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles area has seen a number of highly publicized DUI accidents over the past month.  A pedestrian was killed in Huntington Beach when a DUI driver struck a light pole, an electrical box, and a traffic signal light before striking the pedestrian on the east sidewalk of Beach Boulevard.  In Van Nuys, the DUI suspect's car ran a stop sign, broadsided a van, and ended up mangled and wedged up against a home.  The driver then attempted to flee the scene but was restrained by residents who were awakened by the crash, which occurred at 6:00 am.  Two people were hospitalized, fortunately neither were critically injured.  Crashes in Vernon and Long Beach left people dead and seriously injured.  Suspected DUI drivers were arrested following both accidents.

It is difficult to say what, if anything, has caused this recent surge in DUI accidents.  What is not difficult to say is that the DUI drivers arrested in these accidents will need a good DUI lawyer if they want to avoid a maximum state prison sentence.  Each of them faces charges of either vehicular manslaughter, at a minimum, to second degree murder, if they have prior DUI convictions.  Our recent DUI blog discusses how a person convicted of DUI can have murder charges filed against them in the future if they are involved in a DUI accident and someone is killed.

Law enforcement agencies will step up DUI enforcement efforts following these tragic accidents.  The California Highway Patrol already maintains an aggressive and comprehensive impaired driving program to deter, detect, and arrest DUI violators.  As explained on the CHP website, DUI countermeasures used by the CHP include routine patrol, task force operations, sobriety checkpoints, aggressive enforcement strategies, public awareness, and active support of DUI laws.  Expect DUI patrols and sobriety checkpoints to increase over the summer, not only by CHP but the Los Angeles Police Department and other law enforcement agencies as well.

The best advice for everyone is to avoid a DUI in the first place.  If you are planning on drinking, do not drive.  Period.  Call for an Uber or Lyft driver.  Call a sober friend to pick you up.  Sleep at a friend's house that you can safely get to.  Do not drive.  If it is too late and you have already been arrested for DUI, CONTACT our office immediately.  Criminal charges will likely be filed against you and it is best to hire an experienced DUI Lawyer to represent you.   Berglund Law Office, P.C. specializes in representing persons charged with DUI.   CONTACT DUI Lawyer Robert D.
